We in SiN are very concerned about the recent belligerence shown by the Russian Federation towards Ukraine. We consider such overt aggression to be unacceptable and strongly condemn the actions of the government of the Russian Federation.
We strongly sympathize with Ukrainians everywhere and would like to express our solidarity with and support for students, staff, and academics at Ukrainian institutions of higher education. Our support goes especially to Ukrainian students and researchers at Norwegian educational and research institutions. At the same time, we sympathize with Russian and Belarusian students and staff currently in Norway who may be facing uncertainty and pressure as a result of the actions of the Russian and Belarusian governments.
While we support sanctions designed to bring the conflict to a rapid conclusion and dissuade further aggression, we support allowing academic communities to maintain their links with their Russian and Belarusian counterparts. We believe cutting all ties with researchers in Russia and Belarus is ultimately short-sighted and will harm not only the quality of current research but also future cooperation.
We believe it is important to support all of SiN’s members, regardless of national origin, and emphasize that we condemn the actions of the Russian government, not the Russian people.
Educational and academic cooperation is of crucial value to peace-building and democratization processes, and SiN hopes these can continue regardless of the actions of any government.

SiN står i solidaritet med Ukraina
SiN er dypt bekymret over Russlands nylige angrep på Ukraina. Vi mener slik åpenlys aggresjon ikke kan aksepteres, og fordømmer handlingene til regjeringen i Den russiske føderasjonen på det sterkeste.
Vi føler med alle ukrainere, og vil uttrykke vår solidaritet og støtte til studenter, ansatte og akademikere ved ukrainske institusjoner for høyere utdanning. Vår støtte går særlig til ukrainske studenter og forskere ved norske utdannings- og forskningsinstitusjoner. Samtidig har vi medfølelse med russiske og belarusiske studenter og ansatte i Norge, som kan oppleve usikkerhet og press som følge av den russiske og belarusiske regjeringens handlinger.
Selv om vi støtter sanksjoner for å få en rask avslutning på krigen og motvirke fremtidige angrep, støtter vi også å la norske fagmiljøer opprettholde forbindelsene til sine russiske og belarusiske kolleger. Vi er av den oppfatning at å kutte alle bånd med forskere i Russland og Belarus er en kortsiktig strategi som ikke bare kan svekke kvaliteten på dagens forskning, men kan skade fremtidig samarbeid.
Vi mener det er viktig å støtte alle SiNs medlemmer uavhengig av nasjonalitet, og understreker at vi fordømmer handlingene til den russiske regjeringen, ikke det russiske folket.
Samarbeid innenfor forskning og utdanning er av uvurderlig betydning for freds- og demokratibygging. SiN håper dette kan fortsette, uavhengig av en enkelt regjerings handlinger.
